One of the more basic products for a home gym is an exercise mat, also known as a gym mat.
Uses for an exercise mat
The most common use for a mat is as a base. But there are also some other special uses. For example, as a kind of padding on the shoulders during standing calisthenics. With a little ingenuity, you can use your exercise mat for just about anything.
Common exercises
The most common exercises include:
- Sit-ups/crunches
- Plank
- Push-ups (on knee)
- Stretching
- And more
Simply put, it’s all about different types of bodyweight exercises and stretching. If the surface is too hard and uncomfortable, you may not exercise at all. It is also a good idea to have an exercise mat for most exercises with a Pilates ball.
If you train at home with a weight vest, a mat is particularly important as you weigh more and the load on the floor is greater.
Different types of gym mats
There are a few different varieties of gym and exercise mats. There are the “regular” ones we’re talking about now, then there are also spiked mats, pilates mats and yoga mats.
Nail mats have small spikes that stimulate the body, they are mainly used for relaxation and meditation.
A yoga mat, as it sounds, is used for yoga and is a bit thinner than a standard gym mat. A Pilates mat is not as common, but they are often similar to yoga mats and are also a little thinner.
