A pair of straps is a must for anyone who lifts heavy weights in the gym. They can also be called lifting straps.
Benefits of lifting straps
There are many benefits to a pair of lifting straps at the gym. Primarily, they are used for deadlifts, but also barbell rowing, pull ups and the like.
The 4 biggest benefits are:
- You can lift more. With heavy weights, grip is often the limiting factor and a pair of straps will help you. The heavier you train, the more stimulation and effect you will get in the development of your muscles.
- You can do symmetrical deadlifts. In order to lift heavy in the deadlift, you need to give up the overhand grip at some point and use a mixed grip. There is nothing necessarily wrong with mixed grip, but there are definitely some critics. For example, that it can lead to a bit of skewed development of the back muscles and an increased risk of injury. What can at least be said is that it can be a bit bad to do too much with mixed grip. If you buy a pair of traction straps, you can instead continue with normal overhand grip despite heavy weights.
- They don’t wear out your hands as much. Performing heavy exercises with barbells, such as the deadlift, is undeniably hard on the hands. Many people get calluses and thicker skin. If you want to avoid this, a pair of lifting straps is an option as they put less strain on your hands and therefore do not wear as much.
- They can be used instead of magnesium. Having a good grip is essential when it comes to powerlifting. A big enemy of a good grip is a slippery bar and sweat. This is usually best solved by using some form of magnesium. However, not all gyms allow it. In that case, straps are a good alternative!
Leather or cotton?
If you’re thinking of buying a pair of straps, the next question is whether you want them in leather or cotton. Leather is a bit more stretchy but also more expensive. Cotton is a bit cheaper and often a better choice than nylon which can irritate the skin a bit.
