If you want to train your back at home, a pull up bar is a fantastically simple and inexpensive solution. They are available in several different designs. There are those that you screw to the wall or ceiling and those that you attach to a doorway without screwing or doing any work.
The most convenient for most people is a pull up bar that you simply attach or hook to your door frame without any intervention. Then you can also quickly and easily remove it when you’re not exercising to free up more space and not change the decor/appearance of your room.
Pull up Bar – Different names
These handy exercise tools can be called several different things. It can be helpful to keep track when looking for them online and the like. The most common names for them are as follows:
- Chin Bar
- Pull up rack
- Chin up bar
- Door gym
- Exercise bar
- Chin rack
- And of course the “Pull up bar” which is the most common
There are certainly some other names and slang words, but the above are some of the most common. We will vary a little between the different names here in the article.
Different variations
There are mainly 3 different variations of chin up bars for home use. We mentioned it a bit briefly in the introduction and the 3 variants are:
- A Pull up bar that you simply hook into a doorway and allows you to have several different grips. You don’t have to drill/screw and do damage to the apartment/house. (Best choice according to us).
- A straight bar that you attach to a doorway. Sometimes you may need to do some damage to the door frame. A pretty good choice but the disadvantages are that you don’t have as much variety of grip and it’s not as smooth as #1.
- A device you mount (screw into) the wall or ceiling. These are a bit more often called chin rails. The advantage of these is that they are stable. The disadvantages are that you have to screw them to a wall and cannot remove them when you are not exercising and that they are relatively expensive. Best suited to a garage, outbuilding or similar.
Which is the best pull up bar to buy?
What’s best depends on what you’re after, of course, but generally speaking we think a pull up bar that you attach to a doorway without screws is the very best (No.1 in the list above). There are then 2 common variants of them, one of which offers slightly less grip. The best is to have maximum variation in grip.
The Thunder Fitness chin-up bar is the best in test according to us as it has just about every possible grip type. You can do chins with narrow, wide and parallel grips.
