Why buy a standing punching bag?
There are many benefits to a standing punching bag, so it’s no wonder they’ve become so popular in recent years.
In our opinion, the biggest advantages of a standing bag are the following:
- You avoid all the work that has to do with suspension. This also means that you can start immediately with your boxing training at home. Hanging a punching bag requires both time and knowledge.
- You don’t have to damage your ceiling or wall. With a standing sack, you don’t need to drill, screw, nail or anything else. Your home will look exactly the same if you move or stop boxing. You can practice boxing wherever and however you live. For most people who live in an apartment, it is neither allowed nor very smart to drill into the ceiling and screw up chains for a hanging punching bag. But even many who live in a villa or house want to avoid permanently screwing up a sack in the living room.
- You can fill the bag with water. A normal hanging sack is usually filled with sand and rags/textiles. A standing punching bag is preferably filled with sand, which makes it the most stable. But it is usually also possible to fill it with water. Filling your standing bag with just water is convenient as you always have quick and free access to it. However, it must be emphasized that the best long-term solution is to fill it with sand. But it’s always good to have different options. Water filling is advantageous for shorter use if, for example, you move the bag around between different premises.
- You can move the sack. If you screw up a hanging sack in your living room but then want to move it to your bedroom, it will be a lot of extra work. You will then have to screw it down and then drill and screw the fastening device and chains in the bedroom instead. You will also leave holes and possible damage from wear and tear in the living room where it previously hung. If you instead have a standing punching bag, you can just move it without having to drill and screw. The only problem is that the standing sack can be heavy. Some bags can weigh up to 100 kg when filled with sand. Then you may need to be more than one person, alternatively you empty the bag of a certain amount of sand. If it is instead filled with water, it is easier to empty it during a move and then fill it up again.
Avoid injuries at home with a standing punching bag!
As we mentioned above, a big advantage of the standing punching bag is that you don’t have to drill, screw and damage your home.
Another problem with a hanging bag is the risk of the roof bracket releasing. This can be due to several things:
- If your ceiling where you screwed the chains is not stable and load-bearing enough for some reason, the weight and wear and tear of a punching bag can cause the whole thing to collapse.
- If you train frequently and intensively with many fast, hard strokes, the strain on the suspension device increases.
- If you have an extra large and heavy bag, this will also be a factor that increases the risk of the bolts in the roof loosening.
If your punching bag collapses due to the bolts wearing down, you can end up with big and ugly holes in the ceiling. It’s not the least bit fun and something you want to avoid.
A better solution for those who want to box at home but not do any damage or harm is to buy a standing punching bag. Then you won’t need to drill, screw or anything else to get started. A really good solution in other words.
Depending on how you live, it may be particularly inappropriate to make a big impact on the ceiling or walls. If you live in a rental property or perhaps second-hand, it is probably not even allowed and something you should avoid.
What are the disadvantages?
Are there just a lot of advantages to a free-standing punching bag instead of a hanging one? There are of course some disadvantages as well, the biggest one being that they cost more than hanging bags, often at least twice as much.
Another disadvantage is that they can feel a little less stable at times. But if you buy a model that can be filled with 50-100 kg, it will still be quite stable.
Furthermore, if you have always hit a hanging bag before, it may feel different with a standing bag. But, as with many other things, it’s a matter of habit.
Other options to avoid suspension
Another option we can mention to get around the problem of drilling and doing damage in the home is to buy a boxing rack.
The downside to them, however, is that they can be quite large and unwieldy. For example, you need a fairly high ceiling at home. Furthermore, there will be an extra and fairly large expense.
Boxing dummy
Another option is to buy a so-called boxnings doll. The principle is the same as a free-standing punching bag with the difference that it is shaped like the torso of a human.
This makes the whole thing a little more believable. The downside is that these standing mannequins can be very expensive.
